November 2013: Farewell to Fall!

It's been a long time!

Since the last blog we have  concluded a super Smart Soccer summer camp season and a fantastic fall season. The CBAA u5 concluded their season last Saturday with a Halloween Mask soccer session great fun! Also, since last going to press both England and the USA have now qualified for the 2014 World Cup. Mark your calendars for the World Cup draw on Friday, December 6. Get set for a great summer of top class soccer next year including a visit to the USA by the England team prior to heading for Brazil!

In England The Premiership is truly off and running with Arsenal and Liverpool among the early pace setters along with surprise package Southampton. Then again, some might describe Liverpool as the surprise package! It's been a little painful being a UTD fan so far but it's early doors!

2013 Smart Soccer CampRegistration for the Philadelphia Sports Club indoor Smart Soccer clinics is underway view details here and call 215-822-1951 to register your child. This winter the program is open only to the younger ages and space is truly limited so register Today!

We had another great camp season the campers were fantastic and we hope to post some camp photos soon!

Finally if you get a chance, check out our Facebook page.

Thank-you for reading and remember - it's a game of two halves!

June 2013: Summer Soccer on the Horizon

Thank-you everybody for a great spring season! Although the weather was its usual unpredictable self a lot of soccer was played and my observations were that the kids had fun and learned some new skills to develop their game - that's what it's all about! We have an upcoming coaches game later in June to herald the end of the spring season so if you're playing start the jogging and stretching now!

Since my last blog The Premiership ended  - QPR, Reading and Wigan went down. It all kicks off again in August!

There are some soccer tournaments to watch this summer but sadly none of the "big two" (at least in my book anyway) with the World Cup next summer and the next European Championships not until 2016. Mark the calendar! On the International front there was some good news for the USA recently with two crucial wins in WCQ against Jamaica and Panama - they now sit top of CONCACAF qualifying.

Please checkout the Q&A for parents and coaches that I recently began - hopefully more to follow.

2013 Smart Soccer Camps

May 2013: Spring Soccer Prime Time!

May is blooming (he said optimistically!) and youth soccer fields are crammed with players having fun. It's a great time of the year! My days are presently filled coaching young players of all ages the variety is a lot of fun from the 3 year old taking his / her first kick to the competitive play of talented teenagers - it's all good!

May I begin by updating my wife Bonnie's fundraising campaign on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Her fundraising endeavors concluded on April 25 and she raised a grand total of $15,900! A super fundraising campaign Bonnie did a terrific job from start to finish. The overall total raised by the fundraising campaign was over $300,000 a staggering amount! Bonnie and I would like to thank all the family and friends who supported the various fundraising activities.

Lots happening in England where we are down to promotion and relegation throughout the professional divisions. Goodbye QPR and Reading! Who will join them I hope it's not Wigan! At the other end of the table my lifelong team Man UTD lifted the trophy for a historic 20th time since the inception of The Premiership. Four games to spare as well! The photo shows Mr. Van Persie in celebration mode.

As we all know 'football' has its ups and downs and at the other end of the pyramid my hometown team Barrow were relegated from The Conference. We'll be back!

As we go to press the big news from over the pond is that Sir Alex Ferguson has announce his retirement after 26 years as manager of Manchester United. Highly doubtful that his success will be emulated at any club anywhere anytime soon. Adios Sir Alex and well done indeed! Now as for his replacement...

Registration for the 2013 Smart Soccer Camp Season is underway and applications are being received daily.

For camp locations please view the 2013 Smart Soccer summer camp schedule.

Youth Soccer Comment

I have the privilege of coaching lots of young soccer players and interacting with many coaches and parents. So much good is happening in the world of youth soccer but my message to the adults remains constant - Keep It Fun The Skills Will Come!

Please don't expect children to be 'world beaters' at the age of 10 - long term development will always be the key!

Please don't forget to visit and like us at Facebook - send us a Smart Soccer camp photo!

Thank-you for reading and keep on kicking!

March 2013: Marching Into Spring!

March is here!

This is the month when people begin to dream about the end of winter and the prospect of kicking a ball outside as April approaches - shouldn't be long now!

The first piece of news I would like to share is to say how proud I am of my wife Bonnie who has undertaken to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their annual ten week fundraising drive. She is busy as a bee organizing exciting fundraising activities including trivia (March 24)  and Happy Hour (April 13) events. Please read more on Bonnie's fundraising endeavors here.

In the world of professional 'football' history was made recently when Bradford City from League 2 (division 4) in England reached the League Cup Final at Wembley. What a day for the players, not to mention their fans who sang their hearts out from start to finish. Although they were well beaten by Swansea on the day these are the occasions fans of 'lower' clubs live for and it was actually great to witness such a high profile game with none of the so called big boys in attendance. Even the Dalai Lama got in on the act for Bradford!

In World Cup Qualifying England take on San Marino and Montenegro in March the latter game of particular importance with regard to an automatic place in Brazil next year. The USA had a disappointing loss to Honduras in the opening game of The Hexagonal the highlight of that game being a wonder strike by Juan Carlos Garcia to help win the game. In a word phenomenal! The USA can bounce back quickly though with games against Costa Rica and Mexico pending.

As far as Smart Soccer we are currently in the final indoor session at PSC Highpoint  - the kids are doing fantastic and getting lots of touches on the ball in readiness for the spring season!

The 2013 Smart Soccer summer camp schedule is posted with online camp applications pending.

So indoor clinics continue in March, spring soccer arrives in April and The Premiership and World Cup Qualifying are ongoing - it's never a bad time to be a follower of 'The Beautiful Game'.

Please keep in touch with our website for summer camp updates!

January 2013: A year closer to Brazil!

Happy New Year to all of our friends in the soccer world!

After the usual crazy, but very exciting, fall soccer season things have been relatively serene on the coaching front recently. Taking advantage of some 'down time' I managed a great trip to my hometown of Barrow-in-Furness (England) over the festive and New Year period seeing family, friends and also undertaking a trip to the Theatre of Dreams with my mate 'Marsh' for the UTD v West Brom game. Suffice to say, as the photo indicates, a great day was had by all!

In addition to being a 'soccer hotbed' Barrow, Cumbria and the North of England generally is a place of great scenery  - for example a quick stroll from my Walney Island 'digs' and I can see the Irish Sea and a beautiful mountain (Black Combe). I couldn't resist posting an image or two.

There was a full schedule of top class games over the festive season so every day there was a game to watch and as always Santa was kind to some teams not so to others. For example Villa shipped 15 goals in 3 festive fixtures without reply (ouch!) while Sunderland managed 2 out of 3 wins including the scalp of Man City! With the Premiership now in full flow and the final stages of the Champions League and World Cup Qualifiers on the horizon there is much to look forward to in the early part of 2013. To add to the 'soccer fiesta' the Africa Cup of Nations competition began this past weekend.

As far as Smart Soccer we are currently running skills clinics at PSC Highpoint some great sessions so far the kids are doing a fantastic job!

You can register your child for the next 6 week session by calling 215-822-1951. Check out details here (PDF).

We are also putting the final touches to the Smart Soccer summer camps a provisional schedule is already posted on our website. Full details and camp applications coming soon!

Sandwiched between indoor clinics and summer camp is the spring season.  We have some exciting programs for spring soccer and registration is ongoing. Parents should consider spring soccer for their child it is a lot of fun and although a little 'lower key' than the fall we offer plenty of training and skill development opportunities.

I suppose you could say it's all happening! Again I wish you and your families a pleasant, peaceful and happy 2013 and hope to see you on the field soon!

Don't forget to visit us at Facebook - send us some camp photos!
