October 2014: Long Time No Talk!

Since the last blog we have had the small matter of the 2014 World Cup, we have completed another Smart Soccer Camp season and I have been happily involved in coaching and training hundreds of young players during the ongoing fall soccer season.

2014 World Cup

Congratulations to Germany!

Germany 7 Brazil 1 what's that all about!

Team USA did their country proud and catapulted Tim Howard to National prominence - at least for a short while. Long may he continue playing so we don't have to hear him commentating (sorry Tim!).

England provided us with some great social outings including a fantastic Miami trip and a bus tour! On the pitch however we barely got out of the starting blocks. On the plus side our EURO 2016 campaign started off with a win against World Cup round of 16 team Switzerland.

As promised a famous 'football' commentator quote. to conclude the blog this one from that adventurous manager Howard Wilkinson who always advocated open, attacking football (well compared to Don Howe anyway!).

"I'm a firm believer that if you score one goal the other team has to score two to win".

No argument from me on that one Howard!

Cheerio for now!

May 2014: May Madness!

As the month of May dawns it is an exciting time in the soccer world. All the kids are out playing and it's great to finally see the fields full of energetic youth soccer players after the winter, and early spring, doldrums. In addition this month sees the last day of the Premiership season (May 11), the FA Cup Final (May 17) and the Champions League Final (May 24) all quickly followed by the 2014 FIFA World Cup!

What more could a fan of the 'beautiful game' ask for?

In the last blog I promised to finish with humorous commentator quotes.

Following on from the Bassett quote how about this one from Phil Neal prior to England playing in Istanbul.

"There could be fatalities....or even worse injuries"

Thanks for that Phil!

January 2014: Welcome to 2014

Happy New Year from Smart Soccer!

What does 2014 have in store from a purely soccer point of view? At least the following...

We begin our 27th year of conducting camps, clinics and training for clubs, youth soccer players and volunteer coaches. In addition to wondering where did the time go it is an absolute privilege to have been engaged in youth soccer development for so many years with hopefully a few more to go!

It's a World Cup Year!

Both England and the USA have qualified for the 2014 World Cup here are the dates of some key games. Please join us and our friends at two great soccer establishments: The Side Door Pub and Vila Capri.

Thursday, June 12: Brazil v Croatia Opening Game

England Games

  • June 14 v Italy
  • June 19 v Uruguay
  • June 24 v Costa Rica

USA Games

  • June 16 v Ghana
  • June 22 v Portugal
  • June 26 v Germany

I always mention The Premiership in my blogs and although, given UTD's current form, it was tempting not to I have to be brave and stay with tradition. With the season halfway through Arsenal, City and Chelsea look strong, Liverpool strive to be taken seriously and are doing a pretty good job of it while UTD 'languish' in seventh. At this point I'll take top four and an appearance in the League Cup final.

Indoor clinics began at Philadelphia Sports Club we are running Saturdays through March. Please call 215-822-1951 if you are interested in registering in the second session that begins February 15.

As always I invite you to view and like our Facebook page:

In 2014 I'll try to conclude each blog and / or e-letter with a famous commentator quote. Since this past weekend was FA Cup weekend lets begin with a gem from that wily old campaigner Dave Bassett.

"I honestly believe we can go all the way to Wembley unless somebody knocks us out"

Wonderful Dave!

Cheers for now.

Neil
